Well, hmm. First I left on the boat. That was ending #2. Then I got into the castle and 'turned into' the king? Then jumped off a cliff. That was apparently ending #4.
I think I killed the fisherman, too, by eating all of his fish.
So, I'm not 100% sure if I won or not.
I imagine ending #1 is just dying of starvation, which I haven't done yet.
Mosquixel: yes I think there is a bug right now with picking up the king's item when you are also overlapping another item (there is food in the castle that the king sometimes stands in front of). The king item should still be there on the ground, you just need to pick it up again. I'll try to fix this soon.
I used the King's money to buy a bunch of food and balloon's, then I lost the uniform and got caught in the kicked out animation by the $200 checkpoint.
That was fun. Didn't work out how to make friends, but became king and sent everyone to prison. I see plenty of potential for things to come. Well done!

It came to me suddenly, the moment I remembered the fisherman who had fed me in my darkest hours, memories of a time I'd buried and built my fortune on. With few preparations, I set out unaccompanied to find the old dock where I used to meet the man solemnly unloading his fish.
I wondered if he would remember me, or simply disbelieve I was once a beggar, or if I could even relocate the pier. Soon, after narrowly avoiding a regicidal peasant (an encounter I should rather omit from this tale), I arrived somewhere at once familiar as though a part of me had always been there.
I met a local steward who'd known the fisherman. It grieved me to learn, alas, my solemn patron of dark years past had his burial at sea. The fish had gone the year before he'd taken ill. He could afford no medicine.
By my return to the castle I was consumed with depression. I sulked for days, neglecting affairs of the state, railing at my subjects who approached my chamber. But the storm I brought from the coast has quieted enough to collect my thoughts.
As I write, I can see out over the castle cliff a distant balloon ascending the clouds. I can't help but think some poor soul just let go of his dreams so he could eat. How does a King bear his burdens when it's all one can do to stay in power?
I feel drawn to that balloon rising in the misty sunset. If it's an omen, perhaps I should have a closer look...
Not too shabby. I got ending #1 (fade away slowly, starving) and ending #2 (be nice to the fisherman) and ending #4 (save up money and jump off cliff) and I'm still looking for #3 ... I bought an awful lot of bread.
If you hurry, you can get a balloon and befriend the fisherman before he dies. After I gave up trying to save him, it made me feel better that at least he didn't die alone.

If you steal the scepter, then buy lots of bread, then drop the scepter, you end up with negative money. If you then get arrested 25% of your debt is erased. It's like a government bailout!
Thrown out of the town proper, I found myself on the outskirts, cold, hungry, and fearful. Luckily, the wandering bystanders heard my pleas and were kind to me.
I met a fisherman who was full of compassion, and he shared his meal with me. We spent time together, and while I ate the fish he caught, I never saw him eat. I eventually noticed this, and saw that the fisherman was wasting away! I urged him to eat, and I even brought him food from the local bread stand, but he refused. Maybe he wanted me to survive, so sacrificed himself, or maybe he just couldn't take such a lifestyle anymore. In the end, I couldn't save him.
I used the money I had hoarded to feed myself and clean myself up. I carried a red balloon to add a bit of liveliness to my demeanor. This seemed to work, and the townsfolk gunuinely enjoyed having me around. One day, I was given an audience with the king. The king wanted to live a normal life once more, and so bestowed the royal scepter upon me.
Sadly, I grew mad with power. I turned on former friends, arresting those I suspected of treachery. This went on for too long, and although I was well cared for, the populace suffered.
One day, a peasant tried to steal the royal scepter, and I knew that I was the cause of this civil unrest. I was filled with sadness for my behavior, and I thought of my beggar roots. So I used the royal treasury to buy food for all the townsfolk who had suffered. That was a far better use than my hourly foot massages.
Finally, I became quite nostalgic, and I thought back upon the fisherman. If only he could see me now! I could have saved him, had I this power then. I visited his grave, laying the royal scepter there, in the hands of the only man truly worthy of being king. I then boarded the first boat heading out, to let the wind take me where it will.
these games really are interesting, where you can (kind of) choose your destiny. when the fisherman died, i got mad: "he was my free food, dammit! what do i do now?!"

Thank you for playing. Leave your story here, or post it to Twitter from the link at the end of the game.
How to eat and not die?

One undocumented feature in the game that can be useful is the ability to drop items in your hand. Press "x" to do so.
Thanks, Scott, took me a while to figure out how to get rid of the balloon.
Only have gotten ending #2. I like it.
Alright, all 4 endings!
I had the policeman chase me off the cliff.
I tried to become the king, but when I pressed Z on him he turned green and I stayed in my rags. Not sure if it's a bug or what.

I died of starvation in mid-air.
i love the art (pixel blocks) and colors. got 3 of the endings and started to do a speed run on how fast i can beg (drive-by begging as i call it).
very cool. when is the next game?
There seems to be an issue with the mac version of the game. I am working on a fix and will hopefully have it out soon.
Nice Rick. I expect to see your Beggar speed run on YouTube soon ;>

Well I died. Most depressing game ever :C

Ending #4 of 4
I became king, then spent a ton of money buying food, then lost the staff & had negative money! I then jumped on a boat FTW.
I really loved it. Games with choices are the most interesting. Nice aesthetic too. congratulations from the internet.
@lyuelye: Beautiful.
